DOES MY HORSE NEED A BLANKET DURING TRANSPORT?
This depends on the type of the horse, a draft horse is less likely to need a blanket than a warm blooded horse. If the horse has just been clipped, we recommend putting on a sweat blanket or a thin summer blanket.
When the horse goes on transport for the first time and isn’t used to transportation or a blanket yet, it is not advisable to put one on. The horse will have many new impressions to take in and an uncomfortable blanket could upset him/her. If you are in doubt you can, of course, give the driver the blanket to take along, so that he/she can take it off or put it on when it gets too hot or cold. A name tag on the blanket is advisable, in order to assure it will travel with the correct horse.
DOES MY HORSE NEED LEG PROTECTORS DURING TRANSPORT?
The same applies here: if the horse is used to this, it is not a problem, otherwise it is not advisable. When you bandage the horse, it is important to make sure that they are tight enough. But beware: too tight is bad for the blood circulation. However, when they are too loose and slip down, this irritates the horse, causing him to try his best to get them off.
The easiest way to travel with leg protection is with travel-boots. These are easy to remove and re-do during transportation
WILL MY HORSE BE FED DURING TRANSPORT?
During transport we only feed hay and the horses have access to water. Prior to the trip it is better not to feed much grain in order to prevent colic.
If your horse is on a strict diet or needs medication, we can provide the horse with special feed and medication during the journey if the necessary instructions will be handed to us.
HOW MANY HORSES FIT IN ONE TRUCK?
It depends on the type of horses and the truck.
Small and young horses can be transported loose in groups, larger horses have their own partition on a truck that carries 8-9 horses in total.
CAN I GIVE EQUIPMENT ALONG WITH MY HORSE?
You can send a saddle and other small items for your horse for free if they fit in the cargo space underneath the truck.
Always ensure that the equipment is properly packaged and labeled with the correct delivery address.
Larger items and trunks need to be transported in the horse part of the truck, therefore extra charges are applicable. Please inform us about the equipment and the dimensions well ahead of time so that no surprises will arise during collection.
MY HORSE NEEDS TO ME MEDICATED, IS THIS POSSIBLE DURING TRANSPORT?
Given you provide us with clearly written instructions, the driver can medicate the horse
accordingly during transportation.
IS MY HORSE INSURED DURING TRANSPORT?
All horses travel on owner’s risk.
Gelissen Paardentransport has a cargo insurance for the horses in case something happens during loading or unloading or when there has been a road accident. In such cases your horse is insured up to € 5000.
If you wish to have your horse insured during the transport, we recommend you to take out an additional insurance policy.
